Signs of Depression?
Depression has many different symptoms - some are easy to recognize and then there are others that are more difficult. The first sign of depression is often a change in the person's usual behavior. Common symptoms of depression include:
- Persistent sadness, anxiety, or "empty" moods
- Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities that were once enjoyed, including sex
- Feelings of hopelessness and pessimism
- Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness, self reproach
- Insomnia, early-morning awakening, or oversleeping
- Appetite and/or weight loss or overeating and weight gain
- Decreased energy, fatigue and feeling run down
- Increased use of alcohol and drugs
- Thoughts of death or suicide; suicide attempts
- Restlessness, irritability, hostility
- Difficulty concentrating, remembering, making decisions
- Persistent physical symptoms that do not respond to treatment, such as headaches, digestive disorders, and chronic pain
Some people may have only a few symptoms, but still be very depressed. It is important to note that depression is experienced differently by different people (e.g. children might display unusual behavioral problems). In some people depression is characterized not so much by a sad mood, as by increased irritability, unexplained pain, or other symptoms.
Depression and Negative Emotions
We all have events in our lives that cause us to experience a negative emotion when recall or revisit them in our minds. These emotions are called unprocessed negative emotions. Your unconscious mind represses those memories to protect you. They are only presented for resolution when your unconscious mind determines that you are capable of processing them. We often think that we have dealt with our pasts when in fact all we have done is buried it inside of us. This has huge impact on our health emotionally and physically.
Repressing those memories uses energy that could be used for much more constructive things, like creating the life you want. Not letting go of those unprocessed negative emotions backfires on us all the time. Just when you think you are doing better and getting ahead, BAM! your unconscious mind presents those unprocessed negative emotions for resolution. This creates havoc for you consciously and results in many unnecessary confusing emotions.
My life coaching program has very strong focus, with very helpful ways, of dealing with unprocessed negative emotions. When dealing with unprocessed negative emotions effectively you learn to create better strategies for now and the future. Letting go of your emotional baggage will result in higher energy levels and renewed desire for life.
